When Portal launched in 2007, it shook the gaming world for its creativity, funny dialogue, and physics-bending possibilities. Portal went on to sell 4 million units. With Portal 2, Valve, the developer of the Portal series, seeks to build on the very common question that hit Portal players as they finish this (it is often complained) very short game – “how can Valve top Portal?” The good news is that Portal 2 delivers – for the most part and starts up where the original left off.
The Good News about Portal 2:
If the clever, ironically funny, and witty dialog of the original portal made you a fan, Portal 2 delivers more in this installment. Portal 2 walks us yet again through the physics bending and techno-whimsical world of Aperture Science. There’s no shortage of laughter as Chell meets up with a slightly inept AI with a flair for words.
The puzzles are well-laid out and are easy to scale to—there’s no massive jumps in difficulty from one level to the next. Also the gameplay mechanics remain creative as ever. The portal gun remains as fun as ever. If you thought some of Portal’s levels were clever, wait until you see the funky new twists they take in Portal 2.
Overall, the good news about Portal 2 is that it successfully builds on the elements that made Portal successful – fun, exhilarating, and clever.
